Dear Colleague,
I am very sad to announce that on October 15th we have given the last farewell to prof. Pier Ugo Calzolari, former Rector of the University of Bologna 2000-2009.
The Honoris Causa Degree that Your University granted him in 2007 was a sign of his high scientific reputation but also of his strong commitment towards the development of International Cooperation among universities.
His engagement in promoting excellence in research and international relations had its roots in his wide personal experience. Pier Ugo Calzolari was active in scientific networks on Microelectronics, his own field of studies, and represented Italy in several International Bodies dealing with the Information Society and High Technology for Industrial Development.
As Rector of the University of Bologna he was deeply involved in reaffirming the importance of quality and creative innovation in the transformation of Higher Education Systems, as well as in promoting the values of academic freedom, autonomy and integrity. He did so not only for our academic community, but for the benefit of the much larger community of Universities.
As Vicepresident of the International Association of Universities and former member of the Magna Charta Observatory he has been active in chairing a joint IAU-MCO Working Group which, over the past two years, worked to draft Guidelines for an Institutional Code of Ethics in Higher Education. This last contribution confirms his full dedication, his vision, wisdom and generosity of spirit.
In all his activities he always brought not only a profound expertise but also an authentic love for science, for teaching, for culture and beauty and, not last, for the simple joys of life.
We hope you will help us in reaching all those who may have met him personally. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege to know him, as we did.
